Don't you hate it when you are making a recipe and it calls for something only for you to realize you don't have the ingredient. Or it calls for a small amount and you don't want to buy the whole thing. Buttermilk seems to be one of those ingredients. Well here is a great tip to make a buttermilk alternative. I used to use this all the time when I could eat dairy. I couldn't tell you where I got it since it was so long ago. But here it is....
Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon of vinegar
Mix ingredients together and wait 5 minutes. Now you got yourself a buttermilk alternative to use in recipes.
Hope this helps and saves you a bit of money!

Do you use white or apple cider vinegar? I have heard of this and adding lemon juice but never tried it. Glad it works!
ReplyDeleteI used white. The recipes I found said you can use apple cider vinegar but I usually don't have that on hand. I have heard the lemon juice as well. That should work since you really just need a acid to start the process and to make it a bit sour! I'm glad I could help and hope you get to try it soon!
DeleteThis is handy to know! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteGlad I could help!
DeleteFor a second, I thought my browser didn't fully load the whole recipe. I love that this is so simple, totally going to try this soon! Thank you, Amy! :)
ReplyDeleteYep its just that easy! Hope you like it!
DeleteI have to be dairy free for now, so do you think this could work with coconut milk?
ReplyDeleteThat is a great question! I have no idea! At first I was thinking no because there is a chemical reaction that goes on, then I thought maybe its possible. It would probably give it a little bit of a sour taste. We might just have to do a little experiment! I can try almond milk and you can try coconut milk :)
DeleteThanks for this tip. I've written it down so I can remember in the future.
ReplyDeleteNo problem glad I could help!
DeleteYou are So right -- this is a real money saver! You can also use lemon juice or ANY vinegar I have on hand and I can't tell the difference in the baking, even with buttermilk pancakes it works. Thanks for sharing this great tip.
ReplyDeleteYep you are right! Any of those will work and work well! Thanks for commenting!
DeleteOr you can beat some cream into butter, as it separates it leaves buttermilk! How great is that! Butter AND buttermilk!
ReplyDeleteThats a great tip thanks for sharing!
DeleteThis is so helpful. I've wondered what was in buttermilk. I have a lot of recipes that call for it, but I never seem to have it on hand.
ReplyDeleteButtermilk is expensive so this works great and you should have everything already on hand!
