Old Screen Door Redo

My friend Jordan has this amazing ability to get things for free. I swear it is like a gift or something. Well when the hubs and I first moved into our apartment she helped me decorate and of course she brought along a ton of stuff (she's so generous). Well she found this door on the side of the road or something. Its a weird height, its like a hobbit door, its smaller then me and I am barely 5" 2'. I thought it would be really cool with a little tlc and no money of course! I plan to use it to display photos or just hang cool things off it. Use it as a cool piece of art!
Materials needed:
  • Course sand paper
  • Paint (I used left over paint from other projects)
  • Hammer or other materials to distress the wood
  • Paper towels
  • Painters tape (optional)
Step 1: Sand down wood if it has a finish on it

Step 2: Have fun hammering and distressing wood. Then clean wood with damp towel

Step 3: Put painters tape on screen to avoid painting it. Add base coat. I chose white since we had that on hand.
Step 4: Sand and add a coat of color. I mixed in some blue acrylic paint in with the white paint to get a light blue finish.
Step 5: Sand/distress and add a coat of brown glaze. I did this by mixing 1 part acrylic paint to 2-3 parts water and gently wiping it on and off with paper towels. Sand/distress one more time if you would like.
Step 6: (Optional) splatter a little extra watered down paint for funzies!

I've been wanting to do this since she gave me the door almost a year ago and finally I got a chance to do it! What do you think? What kind of projects do you have planned for the summer?

  2. What a fun and creative idea. Curious to see how you display things from it ...

  3. I love the diverse ways you can use old screen doors. I have them upright leaning on the walls, hanging horizontally as a cornice for a window, and several screwed together as dividers. I do not, however, have a hobbit screen door. Love yours! Came over from Whatever Goes.
