Take Away Odors Naturally
Not going to lie I have a stinky bathroom. I clean it all the time and it's still kind of stinky. But I fixed that problem in such a simple way.... Baking soda. It seriously works. How could something so easy work so well? Who knows but it does! You will also be avoiding all of the toxic VOC in normal air fresheners and its really cheap! I found this other really cute jar and tutorial at Smashed Peas and Carrots.
All you need is...
1/4 cup baking soda
essential oil 5 drops (optional and depending on the type of oil you used you may need more or less)
Some kind of jar. I used a mini milk jug because that's what I had on hand
Fabric and ribbon (also optional)
Directions: Mix baking soda and essential oil together and place in a jar. Cut a circle out of fabric big enough to cover the bottle with some extra to hang off the edges. Tie with a bow and put it in your very stinky room! It also works without putting the fabric on, but it does make it much cuter!
That's all you need to have a non-smelly room!! Easy as pie! What have you done to take the stink out of your house?

Great idea! We use baking soda in homemade deodorant, and in the fridge, but I never thought to put it in our bathroom (which also stinks, no matter how much cleaning I do). Will be doing this this afternoon :-)
ReplyDeleteIm glad I am not the only one with a stinky bathroom! Im happy to inspire you!
DeleteGREAT! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI keep baking soda in my fridge but never thought of the bathroom/ laundry room. Cute and kid safe too, thanks Amy!

Thanks Melissa! Luckily you have girls so they're not as stinky as little boys haha!
DeleteThanks for a way of ridding the room of smell, not masking it that won't make a mess if someone bumps the container. In addition to being prettier, it's safer, too!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you like it! Thank you for the encouraging words!
DeleteI think I will try this. My boys' bathroom is just terrible. I can't even stand to go in there! Off to see if it helps!
ReplyDeletethis is a great idea. I have a Blog Hop, and I would love it if you would link this post. You can find it at

What a simple, cute idea! I have a bottle that would be PERFECT for this! How long do you think the smell-killing power will last?
ReplyDeleteThanks Michele! I would say at least a month or 2. Maybe longer. I guess we will know when the stinkiness comes back :)
DeleteSuch a good idea! I've used baking soda in the fridge, but never the bathroom.... and I like how you used the bottle.... so much more attractive than just the box. I'm going to have to do this! Thanks for the link! :)

Dear Amy,
ReplyDeleteI would just love it if you would contribute this post on 'EOA' Wednesday at Deeprootsathome.com. I don't know why I didn't think of this. I use it in the refrigerator.. I will be making this! Thanks!
Thanks Jacqueline! I just linked up!
DeleteThis is great! I like non chemicals and stinky sprays are a no no in my home. WHY cover up an odor? When you can do this!? Thanks for sharing! We'd love it if you'd share this at our Home is Where the Heart is! http://www.homesteadsimple.com/home-is-where-the-heart-is-link-it-up-wednesdays-1/
ReplyDeleteand any other posts you'd like to share that have to do with homesteading and homemaking!
Sorry Erika I just saw this and just linked up!!
DeleteWhat a simple and brilliant idea. I've always used baking soda to kill odors, but it never occurred to me to add essential oils! I am totally going to do this. Thanks so much for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI'm following you now. :)

Thanks for following Courtney I hope this works absolutely fantastic for you!
DeleteOh what a great idea! We have worked hard to eliminate the toxins in our home and this is just another great way to do just that!! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alicia! So glad you like this idea! Hope it works for you as well as it does for us!
DeleteYou can also take this same idea and use the mixture as a carpet freshener. Just sprinkle on the carpet before you vacuum and you get the same effect.
ReplyDeleteO my I need to do this our carpet smells like stinky husky!!! Thanks for sharing! Sorry for the late comment I was on vacation!
DeleteI have used a similar mixture in my kitty litter to cut down on that stink, but I sprinkle it on. I've also sprinkled in on my carpet.
ReplyDeleteIf you got one of those large shaker jars to put the baking soda in and then the fabric on top, you could use this for both!
Thats a good idea! Although we don't have any kittys thats still a good tip! I will definitely share that with my friends that do!
DeleteA quick fix for the EXTRA stinky moments is a little bowl of white vinegar. We had a bit of a kitchen funk when I was cleaning out the fridge, but the vinegar worked wonders and quickly!
ReplyDeleteI keep a dollar store sprinkle jar (meant for pizza cheese) full of baking soda next to the stove at all times, just to kill a flare up if it should ever occur (3 teens in the house...need I say more). I sprinkle it on the dog bed a few hours before shaking it out. And one time I sprinkled the carpet, said dog was a little overdue on a bath, with the intention of vacuuming it up right after. My company arrived before I could get out the vacuum and I didn't get to the vacuum for a few days. The baking soda seeped into the rug and no one knew it was there. AND it really absorbed the unwanted doggie smell. So now I sprinkle it on the carpet mid week and vacuum it up on the weekend. I also keep a sprinkle jar in the bathroom, it works as a quick sink cleaner when unexpected company arrives and doesn't smell like you went into the bathroom to clean it just for them :).
